page 57 "El Perico, my close friend, had a tragic ending."-Fransisco

I think this tells a little about the hard ships that Fransisco and his family had to go though when they came to America because it talks about the loss of a friend El perico. which I understand is something harsh some people have to go though in life but moving to a new country and when you live there the first hard ship is death thats pretty harsh. It in a way tells us that Fransisco is a very strong person not just in life also in the book.

I think if i had to go thought that i would go into depression because death is something very hard to deal with. but i don't think out of the madness i would shed a tear because death is just something no one could stop so theres no point in morning over that because i think when some body goes they go because they have to because it was their time. god gives lives and he takes live, what i don't get if some one dies people cry even if they didn't know them.

how do you think you would have dealt with the situation?

"Mama then cooked the tortilla on a comal on one of the two burners of our small kerosene stove. She usually cooked a pot of beans on the other burner." - Fransisco pg 64

This has to do wit how the characters try to keep their culture alive because tortillas and beans are a typical Mexican dish which means at some point their trying to keep their Mexican culture alive though their family's dishes. for example they could cook hamburgers or pasta but they cook beans and tortillas so in a way their keeping their tradition alive through their family meals.

I can relate to this quote because i know my family eats some of these meals and now that I think about it it helps us keep our traditions alive for example my family eats a lot of different food but still we always end up coming back to some good old Mexican style home cooking. so basically I'm trying to say that food help
keep family's traditions alive.

So how does your family keeps their traditions alive through food?

1. El Perico was actually a parrot. He was a bird and usually some birds die quickly. I think that since they settled in a new country, El Perico would've not been able to adapt to the new land.

1a. If I had a parrot, I wouldn't be to attached to it. I would be annoyed of the parrot especially since it talked and repeated things. I wouldn't be as sad if the parrot died because then I could go get a new one....

2. I like the quote that you used and I didn't notice that was how they kept their culture. The family doesn't really eat hot dogs and french fries and such, instead they keep up with their culture.

2a. My family mostly eats food in our culture and especially for dinner. We would always cook stuff from my culture and I am proud of that. I love eating food from my culture and I want to learn how to cook this so I could pass on the tradition.

I think that the first quote shows one of the challenges that Francisco faces. It shows how sad it must have been for him to lose his pet.

I think that I probably would have cried but eventually got over it. I think I would really long for the bird because I love animals.

The second quote shows how they still resemble their culture in America. They chose to eat tortillas and beans, which quite isn't an American food.

My family keeps our traditions alive in our food by cooking soul food a lot. Also, we have sould food when have bbq's or parties.
